UV light is invisible to the human eye, which is why it is sometimes referred to as 'black light'. However, some materials (e.g. DayGlo) can absorb UV energy and convert it into visible light energy.
Both plastic and glass lenses absorb some UV light, but UV absorption can be improved by adding chemicals to the lens material during manufacturing or by applying special lens coatings. Look for sunglasses that block 99 percent or 100 percent of all UV light. Some manufacturer's labels say "UV absorption up to 400nm."
However, there are many surfaces that reflect UV rays. Although water does not block the light coming from the sun, it does block neutron radiation and other infrared rays. Depending on your location and altitude, water may reflect less than ten percent of the incident UV. Fresh snow is an especially good reflector.
In fact, UV window film rejects 99.9% of UV rays. Other sun control window films will do the same, as well as reject 97% of IR rays. Thus, the interior of your building will be cooler and protected. Does plastic block UV rays? Most acrylic plastics will allow light of wavelength greater than 375 nm to pass through the material, but they will not allow UV-C wavelengths (100–290 nm) to pass through. Even very thin acrylic sheets of less than 5 millimeters (mm) do not let UV-C light penetrate.
