I recently found out that the technician that fixed my computer after it crashed installed a volume licence version of windows 8.1. I have been receiving messages saying my windows need to be activated as it was going to expire. Will buying and installing a new retail licence of windows 8.1 solve the issue?

All you do is remove the key using slmgr -cpky, restart the machine, and attempt to activate the installation and when prompted provide your actual Windows 8 license key.
